[...] That’s why I do not agree entirely with the label “parasites”. It is not easy to offer support, IMHO it is a Job that no one likes to do. I don’t know if it is true for everyone - but I am very happy to be a developer and not to be a support guy. It just happens that it is exactly this job is actually needed, and hence, can be monetized. [...]

I agree with Raju. You clearly don't understand open source or community, Mark.

It does not matter if one is selling support explicitly for one OSS project or consuming the whole project and more and selling it as a solution. End result is they are benefiting from someone's efforts.

It does not matter if its big as Spring or small as Ant. Once you open source you really cannot complain about someone using (making money out of) someone else's work. If thats someone's worry then they should think hard before making the plunge into the OSS world. Anyone who complains about leeching from an OSS project is not fully embracing the OSS mindset IMHO.

SpringSource did (and still does) consume some Apache technologies into Spring projects, but until the acquisition of Covalent they were not in the business of selling support or products that were explicitly Apache. It was not my intention to say that simply embedding an Apache project into a commercial offering (support or product), while not directly contributing to the Apache project, means you are a 'parasite'.

An interesting side note is that more than a half a dozen Apache projects have dependencies on Spring technologies (mostly the Spring Framework). So, it's safe to say that SpringSource has been contributing to Apache projects and their success prior to the Covalent acquisition.

So does that mean SpringSource was a parasite on a bunch of Apache projects before acquiring Covalent?
Were you not selling services/support using a few apache components embedded in your end product? Sorry I dont know the exact history of SpringSource but it would be good to hear a clarification directly from you.
