[...] Back to the SpringSource Application Platform. I respect Rod and SpringSource a ton and I love how the Spring Framework has changed the way I write software, but I have to wonder if part of this is marketing cruft related to the fact that Spring Source is now touting their own application server. My biggest complaint is against all the talk about how the SpringSource Application Platform is so modular with all of it’s OSGI-loaded goodness. JBoss had a modular application server in 2002! [...]

[...] SpringSource’s Rod Johnson claims that Spring+Tomcat is currently the most popular application server. After the release of Spring Dynamic Modules, it was not immediately clear if SpringSource wanted just to help developers leverage the increasingly popular OSGi, or use it as a means to propel SpringSource’s own strategy. The answer has come with the SpringSource Application Platform. For his platform, SpringSource created a module repository (Enterprise Bundle Repository), through which SpringSource helps developers use tools and libraries that do not have standard integration with OSGi, such as Hibernate.
[...] Spring Application Platform(SAP) seems to head in the right direction to make server environment transparent for any type of application modules, versioning and dynamic restarts. SAP uses OSGI for versioning and dynamic loading of modules. OSGI module dependency and classloader hierarchy can get tricky and you may end up spending quite a bit of time debugging such issues. For simple applications, users may not have to understand the under pinnings of OSGI, but for some enterprise applications, OSGI dependency/classloading model can get in the way. I haven’t played with the platform yet to understand what kind of tools, if any, are available to debug dependency/classloading issues. [...]

[...] Firstly it's a server. A lightweight configurable server with a focus on serviceability (see Rob's original post on the platform). It has useful features such as per-application separated tracing and log files, deadlock detection, failure detection and dump-processing, smart thread pools and work stealing etc.. It's a great place to deploy web applications for these reasons. [...]
