The SpringSource Certification Program

Since I joined SpringSource six months ago as the Director of Training, I have been hearing one consistent request. Based on the growing demand for Spring skills, developers and consultants worldwide are seeking quantifiable ways to demonstrate their Spring expertise. Likewise, the hiring managers behind that demand are asking for a certification program to help identify and hire technologists who have an immediately useful, baseline knowledge of Spring.
Much like the way the Spring project teams respond to the needs of the open source community, we have responded and are pleased to announce the SpringSource Certification Program. This program kicks off this month, January 2008, with the Spring Framework Professional certification.
To become a certified Spring Framework Professional, you must successfully complete a certification exam. A person is eligible to take the certification exam if that person has recently attended the Four Day Core Spring course, is a significant contributor within the Spring community, or can provide a reference to a Spring development effort in which he or she was actively involved. The Spring Framework Professional certification is granted on successful completion of the exam.
To learn more about the SpringSource Certification Program, please attend the short webinar at noon (EST) on 23 January 2008. You can also visit the website at http://www.springsource.com/certification or contact a SpringSource certification coordinator at certification@springsource.com.

Added on January 17th, 2008 at 11:21 amHi Daryl,
I was pleased to hear the announcement of Spring certifications. But after trying to take look at the requirements I hardly get the point. To me there is a huge way between "taking a 4-day spring course" and "having significantly contributed to the Spring community". So how could someone be skilled to pass the certification after 4 days of training if you on the other hand advise to have contributed to the spring community or have more or less been involved in development. As I understand this, the later requires a lot more experience and skills.
Could you give a little more details on that or do you plan to lighten this up on the webinar?
Regards, Ollie

Added on January 19th, 2008 at 8:33 pmOllie, it looks like the sentence you're quoting is of the form "A, B, or C" (as in, A || B || C). You should only need to meet one of those three criteria to be eligible to take the exam. Is that correct, Daryl?
Thanks,
Matt

Added on January 24th, 2008 at 7:21 amMatt, I understood that the three way are "or" concatenated. But I think a four day spring course (as good as it might be) can not provide you with knowledge to simple step into "actively participate in Spring's development". To me, the spectrum in required (required in the sense of passing the exam successfully, not simply taking it) knowledge seemed a little wide to me.
Daryl, unfortunately I missed the webinar yesterday. Are the some slides you could provide for download?

Ollie

Added on January 24th, 2008 at 1:26 pmHi Daryl,
I am really interested in taking this exam, and we have been using Spring in our company for the past 3 years.
Please explain how we can provide a reference to show that we are using it?
Thanks.

Added on January 29th, 2008 at 12:01 pmWhy is there a requirement that you must have taken the training course this after 1st January 2008? Why are those who took it in 2006/2007 not eligable? I can understand not offering it for free for those candidates, but why are they forced to go the grandfathered route? It would seem easier to verify taking a course in the past than providing evidence of products worked on since.

Added on March 14th, 2008 at 9:12 amHi,
I totally agree with Martin. I took the training in 2006 and has been using Spring since then. Now in order to take the exam either i need to take the training again or i need to prove that i am a significant contributor to spring development. That seems a bit odd.. Why do you allow people who attended the training just not the ones who attended it recently ..
