That base class only requires an instance of any implementation of javax.sql.DataSource, and then it creates a SimpleJdbcTemplate for you. Since it extends JdbcDaoSupport, the JdbcTemplate is also available. However, the "simple" version provides many nice Java 5 conveniences. Sure, my IDE is going to help me make the proper cast in the method body, but it won't stop me from doing something stupid. Using the generics on the other hand (properly that is) will help me avoid even my own stupidity. I think you need a new IDE. I would expect the IDE to make it easy to cast the queryForObject call to Account because the method returns Account.
